Why making a demo CD at The Dream Factory can be a good career move

Up and coming professional singers all need at one time or another to send recordings of their voice to concert promoters, conductors, agents, master classes, competitions etc. Nothing makes you stand out from the crowd better than a professionally produced and well designed demo CD, and it doesn't have to cost the earth.

Six reasons why a Dream Factory recording shows off your voice to best advantage

1. We record vocalists using Neumann U87 microphones, which are legendary in the recording industry for the quality, detail and transparency of their sound.

2. Special techniques place the voice in a real-sounding acoustic space, instead of seeming to emanate from a narrow single point, as it does in most studio recordings.

3. As one of our partners is an experienced choral director and the other a talented sound engineer, you are assured of critical but sympathetic ears at your recording session. We are very good at encouraging people to give their best performances.

4. Once recorded, we make subtle use of sophisticated sound-shaping tools to get the very best out of your voice.

5. Our editing of takes is pin-point accurate and totally seamless to even the most discerning ear. We can even graft single consonants from one take to another if need be.

6. Our method of recording your pianist allows us to edit their performance independently of yours, so if you’ve just done your best ever take but the accompaniment has a few fluffs in it, we can simply edit them out later. Even better, the computer can later turn that piano sound into a completely different instrument such as harpsichord, harp, guitar or organ (listen to Bach below). Better still, it can also be turned into a realistic and expressive Full Orchestra (listen to Puccini below).

Studio recordings with live high-quality MIDI piano accompaniment

which can be converted later to anything e.g. organ, harp, harpsichord, band or even orchestra

Brahms: “Unbewegte Laue Luft” (5578k) (4'05)
Edel O’Brien: Mezzo Soprano

If you can't afford a hall, or a grand piano, you might find a studio recording like this with live MIDI piano accompaniment will "fit the bill". (See paragraph 6 above for details).

Bach: “Bereite Dich Zion” (8601k) (6'05)
Edel O’Brien: Mezzo Soprano

From the same session as the previous track, but treated differently. We tidied up the piano performance, filled in some harmony and converted it to an organ sound. Sounds as if it were recorded in a church, not in a domestic living room. (See paragraph 6 above for details).

Puccini: “Quando me’n Vo” from La Bohème (3566k) (2’32)
Sandra Oman: Soprano

The MIDI piano accompaniment recorded with the voice was converted to a Dream Factory Orchestral Simulation

Tchaikovsky: “To Forget so Soon” (3605k) (2'35)
From the album "Tchaikovsky Songs"
Conor Biggs: Baritone / Pádhraic Ó Cuinneagáin: Piano

Location recording in a large living room with a concert grand piano.
Subsequent studio treatment gives the recording a small hall feel.
